In a special effort to raise awareness about the Braswell Arts Center Virtual Benefit Gala, we are proud to present this years featured artists.

Who are you? And a bit about your training and experience?

My name is Zhong-Jing Fang. I am a ballerina and choreographer. I am currently a soloist dancer with American Ballet Theatre. I graduated from the Shanghai Dance School before becoming a professional ballet dancer. I had a rigorous and intensive seven years of classical ballet training. My most memorable experience was competing in the Prix de Lausanne 2000. That experience changed my life. Twenty years later, I was very fortunate to be invited to serve as a member of the jury of the Prix de Lausanne 2020.

What inspires you?

Life experiences inspire me! I learned early on that if life throws you a lemon, make lemonade. I have also found many teachers, dancers, and choreographers I have worked with are truly inspiring.

Tell us about the work you are presenting or dancing in?

This ballet piece titled “The Unforeseen” as created near the end of 2020 for ABT’s incubation project. I used two dancers from the company: Fangqi Li and Andrii Ishchuk. “The Unforeseen represents a dream… a dream that goes beyond one’s own imagination. In this piece, two people choose to stay together even though fate reveals their opposing emotions, struggles, and hopes. The strength of their commitment prevails, despite the fragility of life.”

The hardest part of your job?

I truly enjoy my career as a ballerina. However, a severe foot injury almost ended my career in 2009. It took me two years to be back in pointe shoes. I have learned that I must take great care of myself.

Who has been the most influential person/people in your life? or career? and why?

I would say, my family. They have been my biggest support since I started dancing. I learned from my Dad, a martial arts teacher, “Only those who endure the most become masters.” I truly appreciate my husband and daughter, who accompany me wherever I am on tour.

Something you like to do other than dance?

To create. When I had a serious foot injury back in 2009, I took classes in painting and acting. I discovered many other ways to express myself as an artist. I love to create new things besides dancing. In particular, I love fashion design, and I have a great collection of hats.

Your wildest dreams for the dance world?

We can all get together and have the biggest international dance event in the world.

Something you would change in the REAL world?

On a daily basis, I would like to be myself. There is so much we can change around us, but if we can change our attitude or our way of perspectives, we are already changing this REAL world from within.

Please help us raise awareness about the Braswell Arts Center Virtual Benefit Gala, we need your support to reach our campaign goal for the new Braswell Arts Center at Aeschenplatz. Join us if you can!
