I am very happy to present to you one of today’s hottest choreographers, Marco Goecke. I was so fortunate to live in the same town as Marco, I got to see his work often. The first ballet I saw by Marco was his Nutcracker. It was fantastic. I enjoyed the choice of music, the dark humor, and most importantly the unique movement vocabulary…Very unique movement vocabulary. I had never seen anything like it…I left the theater so inspired. How could I have never seen his work before?! Who is this guy? I went again the next evening! Those performances sparked my interest in  Marco’ s work. I tried to see the shows at the Stuttgart Ballet when I could… especially when Marco was on the program. It is so nice to see something different…something not like everything else.

Marco’s ballets play with different shades of black, which I think is cool. However, the darkness in Marco’s ballets do not reflect his personality. He is a very friendly and supportive person! Eric Gauthier introduced me to him once, a fast meeting after a show. Since then we crossed each others paths a few times in Stuttgart at performances or in the State Theater. I remember once running into him on the street in Stuttgart while he was walking his dog Gustav. We had such a nice chat. He always had a second to say hello. He doesn’t know this, but…. Marco is the first person, to ever subscribe to this series! And I didn’t even ask him to do it! So cool!

His bio was simply too long to put here… I am not kidding. Marco has had a fantastic career choreographing all over the world. Currently, Marco is the resident choreographer at The Stuttgart Ballet, The Scapino Ballet and the new associate choreographer for Nederlands Dans Theater. Thank you Marco for your inspiration and thank you believing in this series… I really do appreciate it.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? Did you always want to do what you’re doing now?

As a child I have always wanted to become an artist for sure, actually a painter. My idol was Picasso…even when I was very little.

Things to eat?

Sushi, Bretzel and Fruit

Books?

The Waves by Virginia Woolf

Movies?

Autumn Sonata by Ingmar Bergman

Ballet/Dance Piece?

Le Sacre Du Printemps by Pina Bausch

Other Favorites?

I love the time in the studio, it is so important, more important than the result of a premiere evening. It is great to go to the rehearsal to start something small with people. The hope and the life I find there in me and in others are a reason to do that thing called choreography.

I like dancers who…

…see the things which I see even bigger and different than myself. Some dancers invite you to their world and they can see further out than you. As if they double everything I ask: my steps and their steps.

Dear aspiring artists,

I would say it’s important to get to know yourself better in order to become a good artist. Which is difficult when you are young of course. But there should be a constant voice that tells you about how to go on and to understand. Be yourself and “bite through” the time when you are the only one to believe in yourself.
