My first year at Juilliard, I would run downstairs after my academic classes and try to see the rehearsals of the older students. “Sechs Tanze” by Jiri Kylian was in the fall program, and Roslyn was sent to set it. I watched from the hallway as her voice carried over the room commanding attention. There was lots of laughter, but also lots of sweat. It was the first time I saw a ballet by Kylian live and I already knew I wanted to dance one.
Nine years later my wish came true at Gauthier Dance in Stuttgart! When Eric announced that we would be doing Sechs Tanze, and that Roslyn would come for the staging, I couldn’t believe it! I mean nine years is a long time to wait… Luckily, I had some time with Patrick Delcriox to learn the piece and get my sh*t together, before she arrived. When she arrived, I finally introduced myself and then straight to work! She was great in the studio, just like I remembered. She was detailed, but to the point. Demanding, but encouraging and funny! I had had a great time and a great premiere. She inspired me.
When I am rehearsing my own work or teaching a class, I always try to make the dancers feel as good as Roslyn made me feel… And lets not forget her cool Job. She sets ballets for Jiri Kylian all over the world……..
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? Did you always want to do what you’re doing now?
Growing up, I really was not sure, but once I was in the dance world, I always knew I would one day rehearse ballets.
