In a special effort to raise awareness about the Braswell Arts Center Virtual Benefit Gala, we are proud to present this years featured artists.

Who are you? And a bit about your training and experience?

My name is Rubén Julliard and I’m a choreographer and also currently soloist at Opera National du Rhin. I trained in France at The Rosella Hightower School. At age nineteen I joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montréal for 7 years where I became soloist. I then joined the National Theater Mannheim under the direction of  Stephan Thoss. Since 2019 I dance for Opera National du Rhin under the direction of Bruno Bouche. Since a young age I’ve been interested in creating. I use every opportunity to create in each company I’ve been in for young choreographer programs.

I’ve had commissioned works in Opera National du Rhin (France) in 2020, as well as, Kit Modus Company (USA) in 2021. I’ve been interested in electronic music since a young age, which has brought me to producing my own music for my choreographic creations since 2018.

What inspires you?

I get inspired from my every day life and also from things that deeply touch me. I also leave a lot of room for the artists I’m working with to inspire me in the creation process.

Tell us about the work you are presenting or dancing in?

This duet is for me one of my favorite works because of the artist I’m sharing the stage with. I usually don’t like to dance in my own creations but this time was different. To choreograph this duet I first created the music alongside with the amazing pianist Karine Betournay. Then I let the music inspire the movement and the emotions.

Hardest part of your job?

The hardest part of my job is to feel free to express myself without boundaries.

Who has been the most influential person/people in your life? or Career? and why?

My family; I would not be where I am today if my parents didn’t support me but also challenge me into this world of dance. They taught me that when you want something in life you need to work hard for it. I believe that you are the author of your own life.

Something you like to do other than dance?

Many things !!! Of course music but also renovating my appartement, learning new things, spending time with friends and discovering the world.

Your wildest dreams for the dance world?

I wish that anyone who is putting the work in the dance world should succeed no matter their nationality, height, weight, skin color, sex, sexual orientation, education, connections…

Something you would change in the REAL world?

Many things are there to change but I prefer to think that changing my own world will impact the real world. If I decide that things I see or experience are not right then I will make sure to not reproduce them. Imagine if we all did this …
